Single exposure to Taser appears harmless

Last Updated: 2007-12-05 15:26:15 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In healthy subjects, exposure to a 5-second electrical discharge from a Taser does not result in any significant changes that indicate increased physiologic stress, the results of a study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine suggest.

"The Taser...is an electrical law enforcement and self-defense devise originally developed in the 1970s," write Dr. Gary M. Vilke, of the University of California, San Diego Medical Center, and colleagues. The latest version, the X26, fires barbs attached to thin wires and delivers a 5-second electrical pulse that causes incapacitating muscle contractions.

Although it is generally regarded as safe, "there have been a number of reports of sudden death after Taser administration," the authors note.

To investigate levels of physiologic stress after exposure to the Taser X26, the researchers monitored the cardiovascular, respiratory and blood characteristics of 32 healthy police officers before, during, and for 60 minutes after they received a Taser shock as part of their training.

At 1 minute after Taser exposure, the investigators observed increases in the breathing rate and volume, but these measures returned to normal after 10 minutes. Breathing was not interrupted and no shortage of oxygen or build-up of carbon dioxide occurred in the subjects.

Systolic blood pressure (the top number on the blood pressure reading) was higher before Taser exposure than at anytime afterward and no significant differences were found in pulse rate or diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number on the blood pressure reading.)

Vilke's team noted some small changes in blood chemistry, such as a decrease in pH and bicarbonate levels at 1 minute post-exposure. Blood lactate levels also increased. All of these measures returned to normal at 30 minutes.

Cardiac enzyme levels remained normal and there were no changes on ECG, a measure of the heart's electrical activity.

"In summary, this preliminary work in humans demonstrates no clinically relevant changes in ventilation, acid-base status, electrolyte concentrations (calcium, sodium, potassium), troponin I level, or ECGs," the researchers conclude.

They point out that in the field, individuals may receive several shocks, rather than just one. The subjects in their study were also not delirious or under the influence of drugs, which is frequently the case in real-life settings.
