Overweight kids prone to heart disease later on

Last Updated: 2007-12-05 17:00:37 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - As a child's weight increases, so does their risk of having heart disease as an adult, according to a report in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The biggest finding "was that the higher a child's (weight for height), the greater their risk of heart disease. We were surprised by this finding because we had expected there would be a threshold above which the risk would increase dramatically," lead author Dr. Jennifer L. Baker told Reuters Health.

Previous reports have shown that risk factors for heart disease are already apparent in overweight children. The long-term effect of being overweight or obese in childhood on heart disease risk, however, was unclear.

To investigate, Baker and colleagues, from the Center for Health and Society in Copenhagen, analyzed data from 276,835 subjects who had height and weight assessed during childhood (from 7 through 13 years of age) and were evaluated for heart disease in adulthood (25 years of age or older).

During follow-up, 10,235 men and 4318 women were diagnosed with or had died from heart disease as adults, the report indicates.

In men, body weight between 7 and 13 years of age was directly related to the risk of heart disease. In women, the risk period was confined to 10 to 13 years of age.

In both sexes, the risk of heart disease increased with the age of the child. Moreover, the associations were even stronger after accounting for birth weight.

"Children who are even a little overweight need to be closely monitored and helped to attain and maintain a weight which is appropriate for their age because it is not only the (heaviest) children...who are at risk," Baker emphasized.

"Our study also provides a message of hope; because the risks associated with an increasing (weight) were lower at age 7 than they were at age 13, there remain possibilities for intervention even in this short period of childhood to help protect the future health of children."

Baker said her team is now investigating the association between childhood weight and other diseases, including cancer, in adulthood.
