Hey, golfers: How hip is your swing?

Seattle Times staff reporter

Golf may be an individual sport, but the swing requires teamwork. If one part of the body's kinetic chain can't do its part, others must try to pick up the slack. Bad form doesn't just launch your ball off in a slice or a hook or even a squib. It can lead to injury, too.

Our hips are often the slackers.

Jennifer Duval, a golf pro at Suncadia Resort's Tumble Creek Club near Roslyn, says inadequate hip flexibility and rotation plagues many players. Your body will take the path of least resistance, meaning that it will make the swing work in some way somehow. That might work for a while, but it is playing with fire.

Duval doesn't just help players on the mechanics of a swing. She assesses their physical capabilities and limitations based on tests she learned at the Titleist Performance Institute. She examines mobility and stability of the upper and lower body, balance, rotational range, core strength and wrist and ankle mobility. She pays special attention to hips.

PGA players have, on average, about 45 degrees of internal hip rotation. (For a right-handed player, the right hip internally rotates on backswing, and the left hip internally rotates on follow-through.) Most of the players Duval has tested are between 24 and 28 degrees. One could manage only 12 degrees.

"People will tell me, 'I have really tight hamstrings, but it's the hips,' " she says. "Many people don't seem to realize that where you hurt often isn't the cause of the problem."

Some people seem more willing to take the steps to avoid injury if they understand those steps will help their game, too. For instance, at the top of the backswing, a player might allow the club to move out from the body and then in toward the front hip on the downswing. This creates a throwing motion with the club and is known in gold parlance as "coming over the top."

"In this case, you will find the rotation in your upper body rather than initiating the downswing with the lower body and rotating into the left hip, which is tight and unable to rotate efficiently," she says. If you have this tendency, "stand up and try and touch your toes without bending your knees. Can you get to the floor? If not, your hips are probably the culprit."

Loose, strong hips aren't just valuable to golfers. You need them to hit a softball or swing a tennis racquet or for just about any full-body sport. And those deskbound among us especially need to do the ground work.

The Titleist Performance Institute maintains on its Web site (www.mytpi.com) a list of golf pros and personal trainers who have completed its courses as well as samples of golf-specific exercises.
