New PBS Listings To Improve Treatment Of Diabetes, ADHD, Australia
Patients with diabetes and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will benefit from treatments to be subsidised through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) from 1 July.

An additional form of fast-acting insulin for patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, insulin glulisine injections, will provide additional choice for both patients and prescribers. It is expected that around 14,000 diabetics will receive insulin glulisine in its first year on the PBS, rising to around 35,000 in four years. The listing is expected to be cost-neutral.
Strattera® (atomoxetine hydrochloride) is a drug for the treatment of ADHD for patients between 6 and 18 years of age who are unable to take stimulants such as dexamphetamine sulfate or methylphenidate. ADHD is a behavioural and developmental disorder that affects children and whose main symptoms, such as inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, contribute to adverse academic and social behaviour.

Treatment of ADHD with Strattera must be initiated by a psychiatrist or paediatrician. About 18,000 people are expected to benefit from this listing in its first year. Strattera is expected to add around $101 million to PBS and Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme expenditure between 2007-08 and 2010-11.
