Keep Your Kids In The Swim This Summer

From the ocean's waves to the local fishin' hole, many of our fondest childhood memories involve water. But splashing, swimming and diving can sometimes be more than harmless fun. As many as 1,000 American children drown each year in lakes, pools and boating accidents.

"Constant supervision by a responsible adult is the key to keeping children safe in the water," said Michael Holder, Jr., M.D., director of Medical Education for the Emergency Department at Akron Children's Hospital. "A child can drown in just a few inches of water, and it can happen in a couple of minutes or less."
Swimming lessons also are a good idea for children - although they won't "drown-proof" your child. Never let your child swim alone. The following tips will help you keep your kids safe at the end of the day:

In the pool

-- Never substitute flotation devices for constant supervision.

-- Enclose your pool in a safety fence at least 4 feet high with slats no more than 4 inches apart. Do not include the back of the home as one of the four walls of the safety fence. The fence gate must have a childproof latch.

-- Wherever you swim, a responsible person trained in CPR should be nearby along with proper lifesaving equipment. Infant and child CPR courses are available at Akron Children's Hospital. For more information, call 330-543-2000, or toll-free, 1-800-358-KIDS (5437).

-- When playing with babies in the pool, introduce them to the water gradually to avoid sudden immersions and quick temperature changes. Don't take a baby into rough water or allow splashing near the baby.

-- Diving should be performed only if allowed in the designated area of the pool. Check for a clear path before jumping.

-- Keep swimming and wading pools clean. Empty cloudy water and rinse wading pools often to prevent bacterial growth.
-- A half-hour before swimming, apply a waterproof sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Reapply often, especially after toweling off or getting in the water.

-- Limit exposure to the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The rays are the strongest at this time of day.

At the lake or beach

-- When boating, include a U.S. Coast Guard approved life preserver for each child on board. Properly fastened, it is designed to turn even an unconscious youngster face up in the water.

-- Flotation devices, such as floating seat cushions and ring buoy "lifesavers," are designed to be thrown to someone who has fallen overboard. Never substitute them for approved life preservers.

-- Forbid diving in lakes or rivers until you have checked to make sure the water is deep enough and that there are no hidden obstructions under the surface.

-- If your children swim in ponds near farms, be aware that livestock runoff could contaminate the water with E. Coli bacteria, which can cause a severe, potentially fatal illness.

-- When you arrive at the beach, ask the lifeguard about any specific dangers (e.g. rip tides, jellyfish, sudden drop-offs).

-- Always exit the water and seek shelter when threatening weather approaches, especially if you see lightning or hear thunder.
