Japan panel urges breast-feeding, lullabies

Last Updated: 2007-05-09 13:00:39 -0400 (Reuters Health)

TOKYO (Reuters Life!) - A Japanese government panel on education reform is expected to call for breast-feeding, lullabies and turning off the television during meals in a report due out later this week, Kyodo news agency said on Wednesday.

The same panel in January issued a report saying that Japanese students needed to work harder, spend more time in school and face stricter discipline. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged when he took office last year to revive patriotism in the nation's classrooms, part of his goal of making Japan a "beautiful country" proud of its past and committed to a greater global role.

"We need to reaffirm things that seem natural, since that is the start of education reform," one panel member was quoted by Kyodo as saying.

A report on the panel's recommendations is expected to come out on Friday, Kyodo said.

According to the draft proposal quoted by Kyodo, the panel recommends that parents should "look into their babies' eyes while breast-feeding or sing lullabies to them".

Parents with infants should turn off the television during meals or breast-feeding, while those with older children should read them books and make time for daily conversation.

The panel also warns that the Internet and mobile phones allow "direct connection with the evils of the world".

Japan's education system came under fire earlier this year for a series of student suicides linked to bullying and parliament in December enacted a law that would help inject more patriotism into Japanese schools.

Long known for its emphasis on rote learning, Japan in 2002 adopted a policy of "yutori kyoiku" - "pressure-free education" - that included introduction of a two-day weekend to help promote creative self-starters, but the system has been criticized for weakening academic performance.

St. Jude gets FDA OK on new implantable heart devices

Last Updated: 2007-05-09 13:00:33 -0400 (Reuters Health)

CHICAGO - St. Jude Medical Inc. said on Wednesday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved its newest device for treating heart patients with dangerously irregular heartbeats and who have a high risk for heart failure.

St. Judi's Current implantable cardioverter defibrillator, or ICD, and Promote cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator, known as CRT-D, are the company's first devices to be built on its new consolidated hardware and software platform to support implantable cardiac devices.

The new platform enables the company to more quickly update all devices with new features and diagnostics as they because available because the basic framework for all the devices will be the same.
