Hepatitis C linked with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

Last Updated: 2007-05-08 16:21:20 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Individuals who are infected with the hepatitis C virus have an increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and other diseases of the lymph system, investigators report in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Thomas P Giordano and colleagues at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston and investigators at the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, used data compiled from Veterans Affairs administrative records. These records are of particular interest because the rates of hepatitis C virus infection are nearly three times higher in veterans than in the general population.

Giordano and colleagues searched for associations among hepatitis C virus, leukemias and other types of lymphomas in 146,000 hepatitis C virus-infected patients and 572,000 uninfected control subjects. The average follow-up was 2.3 years.

The subjects with hepatitis C virus infection had a 28-percent increased risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and nearly three times the risk of Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, a rare, slow-growing cancer of the lymph system.

Hepatitis C patients also had a nearly four-fold risk of cryoglobulinemia, a condition marked by the presence of abnormal proteins in the bloodstream which thicken or gel on exposure to cold. They also had a small risk of thyroiditis, inflammation of the thyroid gland.

Hepatitis C virus infection precedes development of these conditions, Giordano and colleagues conclude. They also suggest "the intriguing possibility" that chronic immune stimulation by hepatitis C virus can result in a progression along a broad spectrum of diseases, ranging from apparently benign to malignant conditions.
