Selenium may contribute to reduced HIV viral load

upplements of the mineral selenium may suppress the progression of HIV, specifically the amount of active virus found in a patient’s blood, University of Miami researchers report.

A trace mineral, selenium is found in the soil and is common to many vegetables and meat products that are part of a healthy diet. The mineral helps regulate the thyroid and the immune system, and it forms antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals, molecules that can damage cells.

A deficiency in selenium is a complication of HIV disease, often leading to an increase in viral virulence, a decrease in the body’s natural killer cells, and a progression of the disease. Patients with HIV are living much longer, largely as a result of antiretroviral therapy, but those same medications can lead to side effects such as metabolic and cardiovascular problems.

“Keeping in mind that antiretrovirals are not the complete answer, the goal of our study was to evaluate the effect of selenium supplementation on serum selenium levels in the body and the subsequent impact on HIV-1 viral load and helper T cell or CD4 count,” says Barry Hurwitz, professor of psychology and medicine at the UM Behavioral Medicine Research Center at the Miller School of Medicine and lead author of the study.

More than 200 participants with HIV from Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties took part in the Miami Selenium for Heart and Immune Health Trial from 2001 through 2005. The patients were given either 200 micrograms of organically bound selenium yeast or placebo. They were in an 18-month treatment protocol with regular analysis of serum selenium levels, viral load, and T helper cell count.

The research-ers found that daily selenium supplementation suppressed the progression of HIV-1 viral load, and improvement was also seen in the CD4 count.
