Internet sex test that works just six weeks into pregnancy

Parents can find out the gender of their child just six weeks into the pregnancy

Parents can find out the sex of their baby at just six weeks by using a home test available on the Internet, it emerged yesterday.

The £189 mail-order kit works by testing a single drop of a pregnant woman's blood.

It produces the same information usually first given at 20 weeks by an ultrasound scan.

Some parents will use the test to help them plan ahead but pro-life campaigners warned last night that a result at six weeks could lead to a sharp rise in the number of abortions.

Michaela Aston, of the pro-life charity LIFE, said: 'This test is very dangerous. It could lead to babies being aborted simply for being the "wrong" sex.'

Julia Millington, of the Prolife Alliance, said: 'There is a real risk that some people will choose to abort babies of a certain gender.'

The 20 - week scan - mostn - m ost mothers have their first at 12 weeks - comes a month before the legal limit for an abortion.

Some health authorities have already stopped revealing the information at 20 weeks for fear of 'wrong-sex' terminations.

An early sex test is already available on the Health Service for those whose babies are at risk of gender-specific genetic conditions such as the wasting disease muscular dystrophy.

Most of these disorders affect only boys - so that by determining the sex early around half could avoid having further tests.

The home kit - being offered for sale online by DNA Worldwide - will give women the chance of finding out the sex of their baby regardless of their genetic history.

Mothers-to-be need only prick a finger to give a small blood sample. They then place this on a special filter paper and send it off to a lab for testing.

Technicians determine the sex by using three tests to look for the Y chromosome found in males.

The tests work because an unborn baby's DNA is present in the mother's blood from six weeks.

It takes around six days for results of the test to be returned to the customer. DNA Worldwide claims the verdict is accurate 99 per cent of the time.

Previous commercial tests of similar techniques in the U.S. have produced mixed results.

Professor Diana Bianchi, of Tufts University School of Massachusetts in Boston, warned at a conference last year that technology was being misused in unreliable tests.

She said: 'In some cases in the U.S some women have gone on to have unnecessary prenatal diagnostic testing performed because their ultrasound results disagreed with the home foetal gender tests.'

Britain has one of the highest abortion rates in Europe with more than 185,000 recorded each year. More than 80 per cent are performed before 13 weeks.

David Nicholson, a director of DNA Worldwide, said: 'This test is based on the science of foetal DNA in the bloodstream.

'Parents are excited by the pregnancy and want to know the sex of their baby.

'A lot of parents even build an extra room or redecorate one for the new baby - and they don't want to wait until their 20-week scan to find out the sex.'
