Excess pounds may raise pancreatic cancer risk

Last Updated: 2007-05-04 12:25:42 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A review of published studies hints that men and women who are overweight or obese may be at increased risk for developing pancreatic cancer.

While studies have associated being overweight and obese with elevated risk of many cancer types, "uncertainty remains about the relation between obesity and the risk of pancreatic cancer," explain Dr. Susanna C. Larsson and colleagues from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden in the International Journal of Cancer.

To investigate further, the researchers analyzed pooled data from 21 studies involving almost 3,500,000 subjects and 8,062 individuals with pancreatic cancer.

Body mass index, or BMI, a tool used to tell how fat or thin a person is, was positively associated with pancreatic cancer risk. That is, the risk of pancreatic cancer rose with increasing BMI.

"A positive association between BMI and pancreatic cancer risk is biologically plausible," Larsson and colleagues comment.

Obesity, especially when excess weight is carried around the middle, has been related to the development of adult type 2 diabetes, they explain, and a number of studies have reported an increase in risk of pancreatic cancer associated with long-standing diabetes.
