Videotaping Older Loved One's Home and Sending Tape to Occupational Therapist for Evaluation Can Alert Caregivers to Needed Home Safety Modifications, Finds Pilot Study Presented at American Geriatrics Society's 2007 Annual Scientific Meeting

Seattle, WA - Caregivers can help their loved ones remain safe and independent by learning to use a camcorder to video an older loved one's home, and returning the videotape to a registered occupational therapist (OTR) who can evaluate the home environment and recommend needed home modification, home safety equipment, or both, based on review of the videotape, according to a pilot study that will be presented here on May 3rd during the American Geriatrics Society's (AGS) 2007 Annual Scientific Meeting.

In the study, an occupational therapist who was part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team trained the family members of 31 older patients to use a video camera to videotape their older loved ones' homes. The OT reviewed each video tape looking for home safety hazards and problems that could make independent living more difficult. All the patients lived relatively far from occupational therapy services. Based on the health problems and disabilities their loved ones had, the relatives were told which parts of the home to videotape.

They were also asked to take relevant measurements that would help the therapist identify hazards and obstacles for the older family members, for example, the width of doorways and height of steps. Recommendations based on review of the videotapes and measurements called for the installation of "grab bars," handrails, raised toilet seats with safety frames, bathtub benches, and ramps, among other things.

"Using inexpensive technology like a video camera allows skilled assessment of home safety in remote locations where, formerly, assessment by an occupational therapist was impractical and seldom performed. Equipment ordered through such assessments truly enhances the quality of life and safety for frail older patients," conclude Colleen Campbell and colleagues at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida, who conducted the performance improvement project. "The results of this home safety assessment pilot project demonstrate the feasibility of a new approach to home assessments that is cost effective and less time consuming while assuring appropriate home equipment and home safety."
