Record number of mosquitoes could be big health threat

This could mean there will be a higher number of human outbreaks this year, and area residents are being urged to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

Research indicates that human and other mammal outbreaks often occur the year after a peak in mosquito numbers. Eaton said this probably means infection starts in the bird population and is then transmitted through mosquitoes to mammals.

"You have to have a lot of birds that are sick before you see people sick ... they always see birds with virus in them before mammal cases show," Eaton said.

Triple E and West Nile Virus have gained more attention in recent years, but human cases remain minimal, said Jason Stull, public health veterinarian for New Hampshire.

Since the state began collecting data on human cases, eight people have been diagnosed with Triple E. Seven of those cases were in 2005.

One in three people who contract Triple E will die. Another one in three will suffer neurological problems.

Eaton said West Nile is much less of a concern as the consequences of getting the disease are much less. Those who contract West Nile may not even know it as symptoms can resemble a common cold.

Mosquito larvae are already growing in stagnant pools and wetlands, places Michael Morrison and his team at Municipal Pest Management have been surveying this spring. The private pest control firm is based in York, Maine.

Late season snowstorms killed off a significant number of mosquito larvae, but now that the water is warming new eggs are hatching, Morrison said.

Keeping gutters clean and removing stagnant water helps prevent mosquito breeding grounds. Things like bird baths and kiddie pools should be cleaned out at least twice a week so mosquitoes cannot lay eggs in the water, and recycling bins should be turned over to avoid rainwater collection.

Many communities in the state have mosquito control programs.

Spraying with an adulticide, which kills winged mosquitoes, is a last resort, Morrison said. Much of the work starts well before mosquitoes start to fly.

Morrison largely uses larvicides to kill larvae before they can turn into winged mosquitoes.

"Once a mosquito gets wings and starts to fly around it is hard to control," Morrison said.

The larvicide uses a bacterium that is organic, meaning it is naturally occurring. It has no effect on humans, other mammals and other living things in the water, Morrison said.

Over 20 communities in the state, including Dover and Portsmouth, and most recently York, use Morrison's firm to contain mosquitoes.

Rochester and Somersworth do not have mosquito prevention plans in place.

"There are so many wet areas in Rochester we are not sure such a program would be effective and might in fact give people a false sense of security ... the real emphasis is upon people taking responsibility for their own behavior by using bug spray, dressing appropriately and watching what hours they are out," Rochester City Manager John Scruton said.

The time of year with the greatest risk is late summer, Eaton said.

"This is the kind of thing where each individual largely controls the risk," Eaton said.

Things you should know about Triple E:

— People are exposed to Triple E through the bite of an infected mosquito.

— You can minimize exposure by wearing bug spray with at least 10 percent Deet or picaridin; wearing long sleeves and pants outside; avoid being outside during dusk when mosquitos are most active; replace broken screens; and get rid of any standing water near home or where children play.

— Signs and symptoms of exposure can be vague, including a fever that last for several days or even weeks, fatigue and muscle aches. If more severe, signs of encephalitis will occur, including inflammation of the brain causing confusion, difficulty walking and other symptoms.
