ToolTalk: White or Colored Ceiling Paint?

Mark writes: I’m painting my family room a medium golden beige color. The ceiling is vaulted. Do I paint the celing white or the same color as the walls?

ToolTalk says: Thanks for the excellent question, Mark! It’s a common one we get all the time. The darker the ceiling becomes, the further the ceiling appears to come down. The lighter the paint, the higher the ceiling appears to be. With flat and low ceilings, there are only rare cases when anything but white is in order. And as a general rule, don’t paint your ceiling darker than the surrounding walls. But cathedral and vaulted ceilings give you more creative options. As long as the ceiling will only be slightly tinted and no darker than the surrounding walls, it should look just fine. The best way to paint these ceilings will be using a telescoping pole on a roller. You will need to gauge the roller nap thickness based upon the density of the ceiling texture. And if your ceiling has never been painted, prepare to use quite a bit of paint and certainly two coats.
