TAMPA - Autoway Chevrolet of Tampa Bay, a Tampa dealership, closed its sales operation Tuesday.
Autoway Chevrolet is part of Fort Lauderdale-based AutoNation, which has been consolidating a few dealerships across the country as part of General Motors' plan to shrink its dealership base.
Marc Cannon, a spokesman for AutoNation, said the company decided to close the Tampa dealership, at 1700 E. Hillsborough Ave., in conjunction with GM's plan. It is the only Autoway dealership in the Tampa Bay market that will close.
Cannon stressed that while the sales operation of Autoway Chevrolet of Tampa Bay will close, its collision and parts center will remain open.
Cannon didn't immediately know how many employees work at the dealership's sales operation, but he said many will take jobs at other local Autoway dealerships. The dealership's inventory of vehicles also will be moved to its other dealerships.
