DURHAM – The shakedown of the financial markets has forced executives of a local pharmaceutical upstart to redraw their options.

With solid results from phase II clinical trials in hand, Tranzyme Pharma has three choices for its next move – finding a partner, raising as much as $60 million or selling the company to underwrite human tests.

Vipin Garg, the Durham company’s president and CEO, says phase III clinical trials on Tranzyme’s lead drug, a treatment to help restore the gastrointestinal tract to normal function following abdominal surgery, are scheduled to start early next year.

Garg says his company is talking with six large pharmaceutical companies based in the United States and abroad about a partnership or even a sale of the company that could take Tranzyme’s drugs all the way to commercialization.
