In a slow race, Dibaba finished in 15 minutes, 41.40 seconds. She won the 10,000 metres earlier in the competition and becomes the first woman to win Olympic gold in both races.
Elvan Abeylegesse of Turkey won her second silver of the Games, with the other earned in the 10,000. Abeylegesse, who was born in Ethiopia, ran in 15:42.74.
Defending Olympic champion Meseret Defar of Ethiopia won bronze, in 15:44.12.
Edmonton's Megan Metcalfe was running in her first Olympic final. Metcalfe finished 15th, in 17:06.82.
The slow pace hurt Metcalfe, the 2007 Pan American Games champion. Her personal best is 15 minutes, 11.23 seconds.
Dibaba, 23, set a new world 5,000-metre record at the Bislett Games Golden League Meet in Oslo in June. Her time was 14:11.15
The Olympic record was set by Gabriela Szabo of Romania at the 2000 Sydney Games, 14:40.79
