WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chris Wright made a spin move at halfcourt late in overtime, then finished his drive with a layup in heavy traffic to cap a game-long swarm of intense, physical basketball as No. 19 Georgetown beat No. 17 Memphis 79-70 on Saturday.

DaJuan Summers had 21 points and seven rebounds, Austin Freeman scored 18 points, and Wright had 14 for the Hoyas (7-1), who outscored Memphis 10-4 in the extra period to run their home winning streak to 26 games.

The Hoyas led 71-70 when Wright made his layup with 1:05 to play. Georgetown then finished off the victory with free throws in the final minute and a last-second heave.

Shawn Taggart had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Tyreke Evans scored 20 points for the Tigers (5-2), who were playing their first game following a 10-day layoff for exams.

Neither team led by more than one point from the 6 1/2-minute mark of the second half until Freeman made one of two free throws with 31 seconds to play, giving the Hoyas a 66-64 lead.

Memphis took a timeout and ran down the clock until Evans missed a floater in the paint, but Robert Dozier was there for another of the Tigers' many tip-ins with 4 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

Jason Clark's jumper gave the Hoyas a 69-66 lead halfway through the 5-minute overtime, but Evans responded with a driving layup to cut the lead to one. Summers hit a layup for Georgetown, but he missed the free throw that would have given him a three-point play. Taggart then made two free throws to trim the lead again to one with 1:20 to play.

The game featured two of the top defenses in the country, and it was best described as a series of colliding bodies following an orange ball. There was maybe one uncontested shot taken in the first 10 minutes, and not very many more over the rest of the game. Pity the referee who had to decide which bump to call a foul, as well as the official scorer who had to decipher which of the many flailing arms should be credited with the tip-ins.

Usually it was Taggart who got the credit. Coming off the bench for second straight game in a lineup shakeup by coach John Calipari following a loss to Xavier, the 6-foot-10 junior single-handedly accounted for more than a quarter of the field goals made by both teams in the first half. He had 14 points and eight rebounds at the break, and his six offensive rebounds were one more than the output of the entire Georgetown team.

Despite Memphis' rebounding superiority, the teams' mutual defensive intensity prevented either from making any kind of a run. There were 18 lead changes, and neither team led by more than six in regulation.

The game featured early season standout freshmen Greg Monroe of Georgetown and Evans of Memphis. Monroe finished with 13 points and six rebounds, while Evans was a major factor despite picking up his fourth foul with 12:21 remaining.

Freshman forward Matt Simpkins, who this month was authorized by the NCAA Clearinghouse to join the Tigers, made his debut and played 5 minutes.

(This version CORRECTS that Dozier credited with tip-in sted Taggart.)
