Miss Lloyd, 48, also says he boasted he would be Prime Minister, although she thought to herself - "not in the LibDems you won't, matey".

Mr Opik said last night he could not comment because he was taking legal advice. He added: "There are some things that may be illegal about that article."

Since their split in 2006, Miss Lloyd - who recently married motor-racing millionaire Jonathan Ashman - has regularly criticised the politician, now dating Cheeky Girl pop star Gabriela Irimia.

He has told friends he is sick of her attacks, even though she was the one who ended the relationship.

In an extract from her book in the Mail on Sunday yesterday, Miss Lloyd wrote: "From midnight on a Saturday to midnight on a Sunday, Lembit would not drink.

"This, he said, proved he did not have a problem. The reality was that he often drank shorts in the minutes up to midnight on Saturday and would uncork a bottle of wine come midnight on Sunday."

She recalled an evening with friends when she found him slumped drunk on a toilet. She added: "The amount of alcohol MPs of all parties drank blew my mind."

Miss Lloyd claimed Mr Opik, the MP for Montgomeryshire, had a habit of leaving her to pick up the tab. Even on their first proper date, in a Westminster pub, he twice asked for money for a round.

When she unexpectedly became pregnant at the age of 45, she said, the MP claimed he already knew, thanks to the psychic powers that ran in his family. Sadly, the pregnancy ended in a miscarriage.

Miss Lloyd said Mr Opik's behaviour became increasingly unpredictable and he stayed away from home for nights on end.

When her father was taken into hospital she decided life was too short to spend with the wrong person. She said: "That's when I made my call and ended our relationship. That was when I became free again."
