From eyelash curlers to liquid liner, beauty wisdom from the East that we can't live without. Beauty expert Kay Montano looks at the latest trends in makeup and skincare...

The Japanese are known for possessing a knowledge of many natural beauty and healthcare secrets. But it was only around 20 years ago that we were finally let into the secret, when brands such as Shu Uemura, Shiseido and Kanebo started cropping up in the UK's best department stores.

Make-up artists such as myself were in cosmetic heaven as we discovered pioneering products such as compact foundation in real skin tones, eyelash curlers that opened up your eyes in an instant, ready-made liquid eyeliner (before then, it was only in cake liner form), plus an abundance of useful make-up in kaleidoscopic colours that have since been copied by conventional Western brands.

It was maverick Millie Kendall (of Ruby & Millie cosmetics) who brought Shu Uemura to the UK in the 1980s. I have her to thank for being blemish-free because Shu Uemura's Nobara 04 was the only foundation that acknowledged my skin colour - and that of many others. Until then, foundation came only in Barbie-look formula. 'Darker' simply meant pinker or peachier.

As for any kind of make-up 'tool', tweezers and the obligatory two-inch, blotch-inducing plastic brush provided were about as 'helpful' as a beauty tool would get. No wonder 1980s make-up looked the way it did.

Thankfully, trailblazer Shu Uemura designed something truly marvellous - the eyelash curler. The hot beauty buzz is that the brand now has a mini version that is foolproof for catching hard-to-get-at, down-turning eyelashes in the outer corners, as well as launching into haircare.

The new Shu Uemura Art Of Hair range is gorgeous and will leave your locks feeling incredibly lustrous and shiny. Try the Full Shimmer Illuminating Shampoo ? designed to meet the essential needs of coloured hair. Musk rose oil helps to regenerate the hair, boosting radiance and adding vibrancy, leaving it incredibly shiny, as if polished from roots to ends.

Meanwhile, the big-in-Japan brand SUQQU has created eyelash curlers that, because of their user-friendly design, could possibly take Shu Uemura's 'No 1 eyelash curler' crown.

Blotting papers are another wonderfully useful invention from the Japanese.

These fine, small papers are great when used in combination with loose powder (to avoid product build-up) or as a non-make-up alternative to powder to stop shine - so much so that I always pop a packet of Paul & Joe's

Blotting Paper into the clutch bag of a celebrity client for a night out on the red carpet.

One of the most striking of all historic make-up looks is the Kabuki make-up ritual of the geisha, which must be why NARS did little to change the ancient design when creating the NARS Kabuki brush. This perfect brush is sure to give a flawless finish.
