New informational plasma screens will allow Logan International Airport travelers to track real-time weather and jet traffic. The six “air traffic situation display” monitors will be set up starting next month in areas beyond the security checkpoints in Terminals A, B, C and E. Logan will be the first airport to receive the $6,000 wireless monitors, which range from 37 inches to 45 inches. “What (travelers) will see is data coming from our command center in Herndon, Va., which tracks traffic all over the country,” said Arlene Salac, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman. “If we have 15 aircraft lined up to come into the runway at Logan, you’ll see them. It’ll be a representation of the actual aircraft that are there, and they’ll move.” The role of the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center is to balance the flow of air traffic demand with system capacity in the national airspace system. The Logan monitors, which will have the capability to display the entire U.S. airspace system, also will be used to show informational videos on subjects including FAA efforts to enhance runway safety and what it’s like to be an air traffic controller. “Placing airport-related information at the fingertips of the traveling public is an enhancement to customer service at Logan,” Logan spokesman Phil Orlandella said. Meanwhile, the Massport board yesterday approved a three-year, $1.47 million upgrade of Massport.com, which averages more than 2 million unique page hits a month. The board also approved a $6.3 million project that will make Logan the first airport nationwide to use a more environmentally friendly “warm mix” asphalt, for the repaving of Runway 4R/22L. dgoodison@bostonherald.com
